Tale of the Talisman
Giselle Simon, Conservator at the UI Main Libraries, and Susan Walsh, Technical Director at the SAIC, will discuss an interdisciplinary and collaborative imaging project that brings the sciences and humanities together, starting with one small Ethiopic manuscript. Non-destructive x-ray computed tomography (CT) imaging technology was used to provide insight into the structure and contents of a sealed artifact, revealing more questions about process, technique, conservation and cultural considerations.
